Tupelo National Battlefield

Tupelo National Battlefield is located in Tupelo, Mississippi, covering an area of 308 acres. It commemorates the Battle of Tupelo, which took place from July 14 to 15, 1864, during the American Civil War. The battlefield is situated near the headwaters of the Tombigbee River and is easily accessible from Highway 278.

During the Battle of Tupelo, Union forces led by General A.J. Smith faced Confederate troops under the command of General Stephen D. Lee. The battle was part of a larger campaign to disrupt Confederate supply lines and divert troops from General Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. Despite initial Confederate success, the Union forces ultimately repulsed the attack, securing control over northern Mississippi and preventing Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest from joining General Johnson in Georgia.

Visitor Centers

Natchez Trace Parkway Visitor Center

The National Park Service administers the National Battlefield through the Natchez Trace Parkway. Visitors are welcome to ask questions and learn more about the battlefield at the Parkway Visitor Center (Milepost 266) located about six miles north of the monument. The Visitor Center is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving, December 25, and January 1 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Central Time). The Natchez Trace Parkway can be reached at 800-305-7417.
