The Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail is a 560-mile route that stretches across four states, linking multiple sites of historical significance related to the War of 1812. The trail primarily follows waterways and overland routes, allowing visitors to explore the landscapes that played a crucial role during the conflict.

The trail's historical background revolves around the War of 1812, particularly the Battle of Baltimore and the inspiration behind the national anthem of the United States, "The Star-Spangled Banner." This conflict, fought between the United States and Britain, shaped the nation's identity and played a significant role in its history.

The trail passes through areas with rich historical significance, including several notable attractions. In Maryland, visitors can explore Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, where the pivotal battle inspiring the national anthem took place. The site offers tours and exhibits that delve into the war's history. Nearby, the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park Museum tells the story of African American abolitionists and their contributions to the maritime industry during the war era.

In Washington, D.C., the trail passes through the National Mall, home to numerous iconic landmarks, including the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol. Visitors can also explore the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, which houses exhibits related to the War of 1812 and the origins of the national anthem.

Further along the trail in Virginia, Fort Monroe National Monument offers insights into the war's coastal defenses. The fort played a significant role during the conflict and later became a key site in the fight for freedom during the Civil War.

The trail's final leg traverses Pennsylvania, where visitors can explore the historic town of York. During the war, York served as the nation's capital for a short period when the British occupied Washington, D.C. The Colonial Complex and the York County History Center provide glimpses into life during this critical time in American history.

Throughout the trail, visitors have the opportunity to participate in various activities. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike or bike along the trail, taking in the scenic views and pivotal historical sites. Boating and kayaking on waterways associated with the war also offer unique perspectives on the conflict. Additionally, educational programs and events are regularly organized along the trail to engage visitors and enhance their understanding of the War of 1812.
