New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve

The New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, located in New Jersey, is a unique ecosystem that covers over one million acres of land. It is often referred to as the Pine Barrens due to its abundance of pine trees and sandy soil. The reserve spans across seven counties in southern New Jersey, including Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Ocean.

The Pinelands region has a rich historical background. The area was first inhabited by Lenape Native Americans, who used the abundant resources of the Pine Barrens for hunting, fishing, and farming. European settlers arrived in the 17th century, and the logging industry played a significant role in shaping the region's economy during the 18th and 19th centuries. The conservation efforts that led to the creation of the reserve can be traced back to the first half of the 20th century when individuals recognized the importance of preserving this unique and delicate ecosystem.

Visitors to the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. The reserve offers opportunities for hiking, biking, birdwatching, camping, and canoeing. Trails wind through the forests, providing visitors with the chance to explore the diverse plant and animal life that call the Pinelands home. The Pine Barrens are also known for their crystal-clear rivers, which are perfect for canoeing and kayaking. Additionally, several campsites and picnic areas are scattered throughout the reserve, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the peaceful surroundings.

While exploring the Pinelands, visitors can discover many nearby attractions. Batsto Village, a well-preserved 18th-century village, offers a glimpse into the region's past. Here, visitors can explore historic buildings and learn about the iron industry that once thrived in the area. Wharton State Forest, the largest state forest in New Jersey, is also located within the reserve. It features numerous recreational activities, including swimming, horseback riding, and fishing. Furthermore, the nearby town of Hammonton is known as the "blueberry capital of the world" and hosts an annual Blueberry Festival.
