James A. Garfield National Historic Site is located in Mentor, Ohio, just outside of Cleveland. This site is dedicated to preserving the memory of James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States.
The historical background of the site dates back to 1876 when Garfield purchased a 10-acre property known as Lawnfield. This property served as his family home, as well as his campaign headquarters during his successful bid for presidency in 1880. Unfortunately, Garfield's presidency was cut short when he was assassinated on July 2, 1881, just six months into his term. His family continued to live at Lawnfield until 1936 when it was given to the Western Reserve Historical Society. In 1980, the site was designated as a National Historic Site.
Visitors to the James A. Garfield National Historic Site can explore the beautifully restored 20-room Victorian mansion, known as Lawnfield. The mansion showcases original furnishings and personal belongings of the Garfield family. The park also features a visitor center where visitors can learn more about Garfield's life and presidency through interactive exhibits and displays.
In addition to the mansion and visitor center, there are also several other attractions nearby. The Lake County History Center is located just a short drive away and offers exhibits on the history and culture of the region. For nature enthusiasts, the nearby Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve provides opportunities for hiking, bird-watching, and other outdoor activities.
Overall, the James A. Garfield National Historic Site offers a fascinating glimpse into the life and legacy of a relatively lesser-known U.S. President. With its beautifully preserved mansion and informative exhibits, it is a must-visit destination for history buffs and anyone interested in learning more about the history of Ohio and the United States.
