Fort Davis National Historic Site is located in Jeff Davis County, Texas. It is situated in the Davis Mountains, approximately 175 miles southeast of El Paso. The site spans 474 acres and preserves a well-preserved military post from the 19th century.

The fort, named after Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, was initially established in 1854 to protect travelers along the San Antonio-El Paso Road. It played a crucial role in the defense of West Texas during the Civil War and later served as a home for the Buffalo Soldiers, the all-African American cavalry troops. The fort was manned until 1891 and was designated a national historic site in 1961.
