The cemetery was established in 1865 after the end of the war to honor the thousands of Union soldiers who died at the Andersonville Prison. It spans over 26 acres and serves as the final resting place for more than 13,000 soldiers, making it the largest national cemetery for Union soldiers from the Civil War. The cemetery is administered and maintained by the National Park Service.
